Usability Study on XM Satellite Radio Website – Final
A while ago in another post, I said I would make a critique of XM Satellite Radio based on factors that Jakob Neilsen has stated, personal factors, and factors that I learned in multimedia and web design course.
The overall project was to design a website that mimicked the company website while also stating the important points of usability throughout the site. We were to prepare a presentation that stated a maximum of 9 points of usability. I could say a lot more about XM Satellite Radio’s website, but the assignment was max’ed out at 9 items.
The results: the study I conducted showed that XM Satellite Radio’s website is not, in fact, usable (nor is Sirius’ but I didn’t critique that). The site lacks numerous items. Briefly, the site lacks a search, is Flash based (with no HTML alternative), is poorly designed, wastes critical space, has information that is below the fold (i.e. below the browser window thus making vertical scrolling), contains numerous outdated content portions, and is NOT compatible with Macs and uses a generic, INCORRECT, error message to get this point across. To see my usability critique on the website, please see here. To see my other work for the semester, please see here.
Comments are certainly welcome on the design and critique, though the work is final as of now.
