Love is in the air!

Yeah, whatever.

This is such a stupid holiday; seriously, who had the idea to say “Hey! Let’s make a national holiday where we give gifts of love to others!” Last time I checked, granted it’s been a while, love between two people is a year-round thing and when you’re married, it’s supposed to be a life-long thing. So because love lasts that long, it should be expressed that long and a STUPID HOLIDAY should not have to reinforce the loving relationship.

“He’s just mad ’cause he’s single”, say you. No, I’m not bitter ’cause I’m single. I’d feel (and have felt) the same way on Valentine’s Day even when I am in a relationship. It’s a pointless holiday. Does that mean I am cold-hearted one day a year on this day when I am in a relationship? Nope. I still give my significant other flowers or something else on more value and lasting effect. But I only do it because it’s “expected” and that’s what angers me about this stupid holiday.

Since when is it expected that I buy you stuff because of a certain holiday? Dare I even call it a national holiday? To me, a holiday is in recognition of someone’s life and their accomplishments in their life. To this day, there’s no clear definition of what St. Valentine even did in his life. Whereas the Bible explicitly tells a very similar story as to whom Jesus was and what He set out to accomplish in His life (albeit there are different versions of the Bible, but they all follow the same gist of the story).

A holiday to me is a day where people take off of work, or are given off of work. Last time I checked, work wasn’t cancelled due to “love.” Nor will it ever be because this holiday is unimportant nonsense. It’s a wasted day, where you get to walk around with flowers, holding hands with your significant other, and all that crap. Then tomorrow, it’s back to the normal routine. No flowers. Hold hands when we feel like it. Say “I love you” if it feels right or is the right time, not when some holiday demands it out of you.

“But it’s a day to treat women with respect and show your love to them.” OK…what’s February 13th then? Oh right…the SAME DAY except it has no tacky holiday name. What’s February 15th? Ditto. I feel that we should have a national “Hate You” day too, just to equal things out a bit. I mean, after all, people do bad things in this world and they don’t deserve any more recognition that someone named St. Valentine. We in the world are so politically correct sometimes it sickens me. And this would be a prime example, except NO ONE would ever go for it. So where is the line drawn, that’s the question I pose to you.

So, enjoy your day. I’ll enjoy it while I snicker at others holding hands only because I know a few months to a year from now, they’ll no longer be together and this day will, as I proved, mean nothing to them.
