Apple Software Updates
Tonight, Apple released two updates for the Mac OS X operating system. The updates are iTunes 6.0.4 and Security Update 2006-001, the first of the year.
I won’t discuss the iTunes update as it’s nothing of importance. But the Security Update 2006-001 is important for all users. It patches the trojan that allows LaunchServices to launch a seemingly benign file that could execute a script. The update now provides a better warning to users. It also addresses the Leap-A worm/trojan that propagates via iChat. iChat will now warn you of malicious files before accepting and downloading them from a buddy.
All in all, both malware instances used social engineering to get into your system and infect it. It still pays to have common sense and know what you’re supplying your password to. It’s important for ALL users to update at least the Security Update 2006-001 which can be downloaded via Software Update or via Apple’s website in both Intel and PPC flavors..
