MySpace and the BBC
In possibly one of the WORST moves that the BBC can make, it is looking to MySpace to revamp its image and appeal to the younger generations. Here’s the story provided by Yahoo!
Personally, the second I hear music or sound coming from a webpage, or a webpage uses extensive non-W3C compliant code, or extensive Javascript, I close the browser window. It’s part of the “code of the web” so to speak. If a site abuses those aspects, you’ll be sure that you won’t get my business or visits. It’s one of the many reasons I am SO ANTI-MYSPACE. Just use the search engine on this site to find some of my other posts about the horrid MySpace. (Surprisingly, I haven’t written many as most were lost when I transitioned to a new CMS). Granted there are a few cool people on there, but 90% of the designs for the site are horrendous. I guess from the eyes of a web designer like myself I’m going to see horrendous sites like such. Oh well.
If the BBC is going to take any lessons from MySpace, it should be don’t do everything that MySpace currently does. The website is a nightmare to navigate, yet few understand that and proclaim it’s the best thing since, well, the internet. I can only hope the BBC realizes this and designs a more appealing site to get the younger generation to their site, but doesn’t use the in your face and horrible design/coding of MySpace.
