Skype and Free Calls (U.S. & Canada)
Not being a regular user of Skype, I decided to give it another try today since I received an e-mail that SkypeOut, the “program” that allows you to call landline or cell phones, is free for users in the U.S. and Canada. So, I called my cell phone from Skype from a T1 line. I wasn’t impressed one bit.
Overall, the audio quality was horrible. Often times, my voice dropped out and wasn’t coherent. Sure, it could have been a cell phone amount of service issue, but it wasn’t. I also called my landline and left a radio playing on the other end while I listened via the computer. Same scenario – so that eliminates the low service area since the landline doesn’t use a cell to transmit/receive a call, per say.
So, I guess you get what you pay for. Earlier this year, I talked with someone else from Skype to Skype (computer to computer) and the quality was worse. I couldn’t hear the person on the other end, yet they could hear me loud and clear. It could have been network congestion except it was middle of the day, which is usually an off-peak hour (at least where I am – that can’t vouch for the connection between my computer and the other computer, though). Overall, I’m not impressed and I feel as if the Gizmo Project was a much better system, clearly voice calls, and the interface is much more robust.
I’d hands down recommend the Gizmo Project over Skype any day.
