Google, YouTube, the Downfall, and Questions

So, Google acquired YouTube a few weeks ago. That’s great and all. I’m kind of tired of the comments on numerous web boards that say “YouTube sucks now that Google bought it” or “YouTube is dead”, etc. Of course those users never give any reason as to what has changed on the site so drastically that makes them so offended and outspoken about the site. After all, the original YouTube team still controls the site. Google was adamant about that when they purchased YouTube.

So what is the big deal? Is it the fact that since Google acquired the site that videos are being taken offline and off of the site due to DMCA and other requests by other agencies such as the removal of 30,000 videos held by Japanese copyright holders? That’s understandable but at the same time, people are acting like this wouldn’t have happened had Google not stepped in and purchased the site. It would have happened regardless. I guess some people just fail to see that.

Does anyone really think that a site founded by two guys and a team of less than 100 people on board controlling the site and editing content would say “No, we’re going to host what we want” and ignore foreign government requests and the DMCA? That’d be absurd because they’d lose. A team of 100 (assuming YouTube actually went to court over the videos) up against a multi-million dollar corporation such as those in conjunction with the DMCA would be crushed. It wouldn’t make financial sense anyway to be the tough guy and fight it out in court. As it stands, YouTube makes little to no money as there is no direct source of advertising and the site is free to join and upload videos.

I guess I’m curious as to why some users feel that the site is now “dead” (according to some) now that Google has acquired it. What changes have been specifically made that the site is now no longer what it used to be and is deleting certain content that crucial to the site being a good site? I’m just curious on your thoughts. Feel free to share.
