Go Green in 2007

An interesting article was posted on MSNBC today about the top 10 ways you can go green and not change your lifestyle drastically. The cool thing about it is that it’s all achievable and realistic. The article is at the following link: Environment: Easy to Be Green

Some of the suggestions include subscribing to a service that will reduce your junk postal mail. While it’s not free, the companies promise significant drops on junk mail upwards of 85% (41pounds.org). Alternatively, you could just call the offending company that is sending the mail and tell them you want to unsubscribe. Some of the interesting statistics provided on 41pounds.org that prove the overall impact of junk mail on the world are that 4 million tons of junk mail are produced each year, the production and disposal of junk mail produces energy that is equivalent to 2.8 million cars, and 100 million trees are cut down each year to produce the junk mail sent to households worldwide.

Some other ideas that are pretty common sense and easy to do are:

  • Air dry your laundry and use your washing machine only if it’s full. This reduces CO2 missions.
  • When using your washer, use cold water if possible.
  • Don’t throw away batteries/electronics. Check the manufacturer’s website for proper disposal and disposal locations such as Staples or Office Depot nearby.
  • Unplug those items not in use or use a power strip and when those items aren’t in use, hit the power button on the power strip.
  • Drink tap water. It’s better for you anyway with the fluoride and reduces the cost and pollution put into making bottled water.
  • Recycle (it’s a given).

The article is pretty straightforward and most of the things it suggestions to keep the Earth clean and save you some money on energy bills, too, is practical and easy to do. It’s worth a shot at least!
