State of the Union
Tonight, I watched the State of the Union address. While President Bush makes a few good points, a lot of the points are lacking in my opinion.
For example, he discusses the push to get off of oil and other polluting agents to reduce our reliance on Middle Eastern countries. This is great news that products like Hydrogen, Ethanol, and other alternative fuel sources are being looked into. However, that’s all that’s being done right now and that bothers me. He makes a lot of points, but doesn’t go about how to achieve those points; essentially, it’s all talk and little action or insight into how it’s going to be accomplished. It’s hard to believe something when you can’t see it, unless it’s deeply set in your roots.
Regarding education, I think it’s important to push the initiative to educate younger children in science and math courses. However, no mention of Liberal Arts. That also bothers me. Liberal Arts are pretty important to me and have been proven to show that it makes a well-rounded individual and has benefits throughout life. President Bush goes on to discuss how teen pregnancy is down and teens are making better decisions supposedly due to the action of the government. I disagree that it was because of the government’s actions. I’m pretty set in the fact that Liberal Arts play a role.
My views about stem cell research are a bit scattered but overall, I think it’s an interesting idea that should be tried. If a stem cell can grow into an organ or essential portion of the body that someone desperately needs, then I am all for it. He claims that “body parts should not be sold”, but I don’t think it has anything to do with “sales.” If a person needs an organ and a stem cell can be created and morphed into that organ, it prevents the searching of an organ donor who is willing to give their organ and/or searching for a ‘vacant/unused’ organ. While I am a Christian, I think God would want it to be like this: if it can better society or a person’s life with no harm to others, then why not? They are undeveloped cells that can turn into numerous forms of a cell, so it’s not killing a living being or any of that argument, in my opinion.
I don’t know…I guess overall the State of the Union 2006 was interesting but as usual, it’s uninformative. It lacks the arguments on HOW we are going to get to these goals and achieve them. If there was more background (albeit it a short version of the whole story) on all topics, I’d be willing to accept the fact that we’re looking into alternative fuel sources; that education is important and science and math should be stressed; etc. But because the State of the Union usually lacks the ability to expand and describe how things are going to be accomplished, I find a lot of the ideas unrealistic and not able to be achieved.
P.S. Anyone see Rex the bomb sniffing dog there?
